Endoscopy

An endoscopy is a procedure that uses a scope to view the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. This minimally invasive procedure is one of the best ways to evaluate the digestive tract for conditions like GERD and ulcers.

Frequently
Asked
Questions

When should you get an endoscopy?

An endoscopy is often recommended if a diagnosis cannot be made with a simple consultation or physical exam.

There are several reasons for an endoscopy, including:

  • Dealing with digestive symptoms like persistent heartburn, acid reflux, or abdominal pain
  • Determining the extent or seriousness of a digestive disorder
  • Evaluating a current digestive condition
  • Taking a biopsy of the lining of the digestive tract
  • Performing a cancer screening
  • Removing a polyp or small tumor
  • Stopping internal bleeding and to determine the cause of the bleeding

What will an endoscopy show?

An endoscopy can reveal ulcers, hernias, internal bleeding, polyps, tumors, and other digestive issues. Endoscopies are highly accurate since they provide a direct view of the digestive tract.

What should I expect from my upper endoscopy?

When you come in for an endoscopy, we will take your vital signs and then place an IV into your arm to provide you with pain medication and sedation to help you relax during the procedure. From there, a thin, flexible tube with a camera attached is carefully inserted into the throat and down into the stomach so we can examine the lining. This procedure can take anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour to complete.
